KIMS Observes the World Spinal Cord Injury Day

 Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) observed the World Spinal Cord Injury Day on 5th September 2021 as a part of Injury Prevention Week spearheaded by Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Association of Spine Surgeons of India and The International Spinal Cord Society (ISCOS) to create awareness on spinal cord injuries amongst the general public. It would in turn facilitate an inclusive life for persons with disabilities and ensure greater chances of the success of prevention programs. Spinal Cords Society, The International Spinal Cords Society, Spine Society - Delhi Chapter, Association of Spine Surgeons of India, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, Spine Society of Odisha, Odisha Orthopaedic Association and Swami Vivekanand National Institute of Rehabilitation Training & Research (SVNIRTAR) collaborated with KIMS to organise this event with an intention of increasing awareness and training protocols for preventing injuries and using safer techniques in everyday activities. Experienced spine surgeons and Orthopedists addressed the audience on understanding of spinal cord injuries and their impact, effect and treatment.





Inaugurating the session Dr. Achyuta Samanta, MP, Kandhamal and Founder, KIIT & KISS stressed on three pillars of Spinal Cord Injury - Prevention, Treatment and Inclusion.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Shankar Acharya, Chairman, Department of Spinal Surgery, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi and President, Association of Spine Surgeons of India said, “Prevention in Spinal Cord Injury is Cure. The mind does not understand what the eyes do not see. It is important to create awareness on Spinal Cord Injury. Telemedicine and telehealth in these times of pandemic is really important to train, learn and reduce the gap between injury and cure.”

Among others Prof. Basant Kumar Behera, Professor, Orthopaedics, KIMS & Secretary, Odisha Orthopaedic Association; Sulochana Das, Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Odisha; Dr. Nirmal Mohapatra, Prof & HOD Orthopaedics, SCB Medical College and Director Regional Spine Injury Center, Cuttack, Dr. Shakti Das, Director of Swami Vivekanand National Institute of Rehabilitation Training & Research (SVNIRTAR), Olatpur, Dr. Dillip Kumar Samantaray, President, Odisha Orthopaedic Association, Dr. Madan Mohan Sahoo, Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedics, SCB Medical College, Cuttack, Dr. Jitendra Kumar Rout, Secretary, Spine Society of Odisha, Dr. Tanmoy Mohanty, Head of Department, Orthopaedics, KIMS were also present on the occasion.
